In the late 1960s, Bachman co-founded The Guess Who, a Canadian rock band that achieved international success. He served as the lead guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist for the group. The Guess Who had several hit songs, including "These Eyes," "American Woman," and "No Time," which helped establish them as one of the most successful Canadian rock bands of the era.

In the early 1970s, Bachman left The Guess Who due to creative differences and formed Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) with his brothers, Tim and Robbie, as well as Fred Turner. They achieved commercial success with hits such as "Takin' Care of Business," "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet," and "Roll On Down the Highway."
