INFO: Michael Jackson performs ‘Billie Jean’ in Bremen, Germany on: August 8th, 1992, at the: Weserstadion, with a sold out stadium of: 42,000 people.

FUN FACT: This is a square stadium

STORY ABOUT THIS VENUE: The Weserstadion is a football stadium in Bremen, Germany. The Weserstadion is picturesquely located on the north bank of the Weser River and is surrounded by lush green parks (the name ‘Werder’ is a regional German word for ‘river peninsula’). The city centre is only about one kilometre away. It is the home stadium of the German Bundesliga team Werder Bremen.

Artists who have performed at the stadium include Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Depeche Mode, Metallica, the Rolling Stones, Guns N' Roses and Van Halen.

The stadium originally had an athletics track, but this was partially removed in 2002 when the pitch was lowered by 2.1 metres and the stands on the straight were extended onto the new pitch. This increased the capacity to around 8,000 seats. In 2004, four office towers were built behind the north stand. These towers provide a restaurant and offices for the club and local companies.

After various previous conversions, the stadium was extended, completely rebuilt and modernised between 2008 and 2011. The façade was coated with photovoltaic panels and a new roof was placed on top of the old roof support structure (the old roof itself was demolished). Both ends (east and west) were demolished and rebuilt parallel to the end line of the pitch, with the remains of the old athletics track removed. Since the rebuild was completed at the start of the 2011/12 season, the stadium has a capacity of just over 42,000 for national matches and over 37,000 for international matches. The stadium is owned by Bremer Weser-Stadion GmbH, which is equally owned by SV Werder Bremen and the City of Bremen.
